What is it that makes some of us successful in business/work and others not?

That’s too hard a topic to tackle here so we won’t go there. But, have you ever wondered – is it a mere coincidence that most successful people tend to be more organised and disciplined than the rest of us? I think not.

We could certainly learn a lot from those who have been successful in life. As the saying goes – to be wise, learn from the wise. To be successful, learn from those who are successful.

Everyone regardless of goals and background can learn to be more organised. If it helps you on your journey to success then so much better. It is far more satisfying and fun being organized than we care to admit.

While this article discusses our topic from a work perspective, you can also apply these tips to make you more organised in other areas of your life.

My mentor always tells me that progress is making small improvements consistently. We can apply this formula to basically anything in life including our work. I hate to think how much percentage of our lives are wasted by being disorganised and disorderly. A significant portion is probably right on the mark.

If you find that in in your daily work you are not as productive as you could possibly be, here are 5 simple steps to get you organised.

  1. Always prioritise your work by importance rather than urgency. The important tasks should be given more attention and more of your time. You will find that your tasks will never become urgent if you do them based on importance and with proper planning.
  2. Always Plan your Work. Any tasks that are not important should not be in the Plan. Get a Schedule either in the form of a Diary, PDA, Mobile or a desktop program like Microsoft Outlook. It doesn’t matter which one you use as long as you use one.
  3. Always Work your Plan. Anything that is not on the Plan should not be done. The best time to plan is before you start work every morning or after each day’s work. While not the best idea but works for some, you can also do your planning at home after dinner.
  4. Break down large projects/tasks into smaller manageable bits which you can manage effectively. Think about this for a second because it’s not rocket science. How do you eat an elephant? Exactly, one mouthful at a time. The problem with attempting to do a large task in one sitting is that it is easier for you to lose track of the expected outcome. You may lose your motivation and never get to complete the project.
  5. Recognize your time wasting activities and eliminate them all. This refers to phone calls, meetings, morning teas, time around the water coolers, colleagues dropping by to chat, surfing on the internet, and anything that is not directly related to work.
